These two technologies dominate the high-end TV market, but they work in fundamentally different ways. OLED panels can also be made incredibly thin because there is no backlight layer.

Brightness

QLED TVs have the advantage here. The best QLED and LCD TVs can reach much higher peak brightness, making them ideal for bright living rooms with windows. OLEDs have become brighter with each generation, but they still cannot match the luminance of top-tier QLEDs. For most viewers in typical rooms, however, an OLED is plenty bright, and its superior contrast often results in a more compelling HDR image.

Viewing Angles and Uniformity

OLED is superior in both. LCD-based displays, including QLED, suffer from color shift and contrast loss when viewed from an angle. Even the best QLEDs show some degradation beyond the sweet spot. OLED maintains color and contrast from almost any angle, and the screen is uniformly bright across the entire panel.

Color, Resolution, and Video Processing

Both technologies can produce accurate colors, though QD-OLED sets deliver an exceptionally wide color gamut. Resolution is identical: most models are 4K, with some 8K options available. Video processing depends on the TV’s chipset rather than the display technology, so there are no inherent differences.

Sizes and Price

QLED TVs are available in a wider range of sizes, from 32 inches up to 115 inches. OLED models come in fewer sizes: 42, 48, 55, 65, 77, 83, 88, and 97 inches. That 97-inch beast costs many thousands of dollars. For large screens over 65 inches, QLED is significantly more affordable. A 77-inch OLED typically costs over $2,200, while a 75-inch QLED can be found for much less. Price is a major factor for many buyers, especially in the growing market for televisions 75 inches and larger.

Burn-In Risk

All OLED screens are susceptible to burn-in, where static elements like channel logos or news tickers leave permanent marks. LCD-based QLED displays are much less vulnerable. In real-world use, burn-in is rare unless you watch the same channel with a static logo for many hours every day. As long as you vary your content, an OLED should last years without issues. Some newer OLED panels include safeguards like pixel shifting and screen savers to mitigate burn-in.
