
Siri has long been the underdog in the virtual assistant arena, trailing behind Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa in both intelligence and reliability. For years, Apple users endured limited functionality, inconsistent responses, and a seeming lack of ambition from Cupertino. The promise of Apple Intelligence, first teased in 2024, was supposed to change that. Yet two major iOS updates came and went without the supercharged Siri that Apple had repeatedly hinted at. Siri AI will only roll out to devices that support Apple Intelligence — a designation that includes every iPhone released since the iPhone 15 Pro, along with iPads and Macs powered by Apple silicon. The 2024 iPad mini also qualifies because it shares the same system-on-chip (SoC) as the iPhone 15 Pro. The base models will still get the core improvements (chained commands, contextual understanding), but expressive voices and advanced speech recognition may remain exclusive to higher-tier hardware.
This hardware stratification is reminiscent of how Apple reserves ProRAW photography or ProMotion displays for higher-end iPhones. It also hints at a future where Apple's AI capabilities could become a significant differentiator between models, much like camera systems and battery life.
Background: The Long Road to Siri AI
