What Is Copilot Plus PC?

Copilot Plus PC (often stylized Copilot+ PC) refers to a new category of Windows computers that meet specific hardware specifications designed to handle on-device AI processing. This standard was announced by Microsoft in May 2024, with the first wave of devices releasing later that year. Unlike the Copilot assistant, Copilot+ PC is not a downloadable feature—it’s a set of physical components, including a neural processing unit (NPU) capable of at least 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS), a modern CPU, GPU, and at least 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus chips first powered these machines, followed by AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 series and Intel’s Lunar Lake processors.

Copilot+ PCs are built to run advanced AI features locally, which means data doesn’t have to be sent to the cloud for processing. That enables faster response times, better privacy, and offline accessibility. The initial marketing push highlighted features such as Recall, Live Captions, Cocreator, and Microsoft Photos enhancements. Recall is arguably the most talked-about feature—it acts like a photographic memory, capturing snapshots of your screen so you can search for past activities, websites, and documents using natural language. Due to privacy and security concerns, Microsoft postponed the general rollout and modified the feature before release.

Not every Windows computer can run Copilot Plus features, even if they have the Copilot assistant installed. The hardware requirement ensures that all NPU-enabled AI tasks can be processed with high performance and low power consumption, which is particularly important for battery life.

Key Differences Between Copilot and Copilot Plus PC

The most simple way to think about it: Copilot is the assistant that lives in your software, while Copilot+ PC is the machine that runs it and additional AI features locally. Here’s a breakdown of the core differences:

If you are planning to buy a new laptop, investing in a Copilot+ PC is a forward-looking choice. The NPU will gradually become an integral part of Windows 12 and future operating system updates. Early Copilot+ PC owners can already enjoy premium battery life and quiet fanless designs (on ARM models). But a Copilot+ PC is not a magic bullet: many everyday applications are still regular x86 apps that won’t take advantage of the NPU. Compatibility with ARM processors was an issue initially, but Microsoft’s Prism emulation and growing native ARM app library have reduced those concerns dramatically.

Copilot for consumers is free. With a free Microsoft account, you get limited responses and image generations. Microsoft has consistently stated that AI will be the defining technology for Windows. If you only plan to ask Copilot chatbot questions occasionally, a standard machine is fine.
