
It is about to become much easier to spot AI-generated text. Anthropic, the company behind the Claude family of large language models, has announced that invisible AI watermarks will soon be embedded in all Claude-created content. The announcement is one of the clearest signs that the AI industry is moving from voluntary transparency toward enforceable disclosure standards.
Under the new policy, which is mandated by the European Union's AI Act, any text or files created or 'otherwise touched' by Claude will carry an invisible identifying mark. That includes computer code, company reports, marketing copy, and cover letters written with Claude's help. The watermark is designed to be invisible to human readers but detectable by software tools, making it much harder for AI-generated content to pass as purely human work.
Anthropic's Claude watermark rollout
According to a support page recently published by Anthropic, new Claude models launched in the EU on or after August 2, 2026 will support the watermarking of content they create or edit. The company also says it is working to add watermarking abilities to previously launched Claude models, although no specific timeline has been announced for older versions.
The rollout will not be limited to Europe. Anthropic has said it will deploy Claude's watermarking abilities worldwide and across all Claude products, including Claude Cowork, Claude Code, and the Claude API. As a result, users in other countries will experience the same watermarking behavior even though the legal mandate comes from Brussels.
How Claude text watermarking works
Text watermarking is a technical challenge. Unlike a visible badge on an image, a text watermark has to be built into the structure of the language itself without harming readability. Anthropic says a supported Claude model 'weaves an imperceptible watermark into the text itself.' The mark survives copying and pasting, and it can also survive some editing, though not all modifications.
The technique typically relies on subtle statistical patterns in the choice of words or sentence structures. The model makes deterministic or probabilistic choices during generation that leave a recognizable signature. A detector with access to the watermark algorithm can then analyze new text and estimate the likelihood that it came from a particular model.

Text is not the only output that will carry a marker. Claude will attach provenance metadata to certain files it creates, including SVG, PNG, and JPG image files. Provenance metadata is a set of machine-readable details embedded in the file itself. It can indicate when a file was created, what model created it, and possibly what edits were applied.
The combination of invisible text watermarking and file metadata gives Claude a layered approach to transparency. For text-heavy documents, readers can rely on the language-level watermark. For image files, metadata can provide additional context. This matters because generative tools are increasingly used to produce entire documents and graphics that look indistinguishable from human-made assets.
Edge cases and limitations
One important nuance is that a Claude watermark does not necessarily mean the content was originally created by Claude. Human-written text that is later edited by Claude will also receive a watermark. That means the marker is closer to a sign of AI involvement, not a proof of pure AI authorship. A person could write most of a report and only ask Claude to rewrite a few paragraphs, yet the final report could still carry the mark.
There will also be situations where Claude-touched content is not watermarked. Anthropic acknowledges that heavily edited content may lose its watermark, very short content may not receive one, and older Claude models without watermarking support will not produce marked text. These exceptions are important because the absence of a watermark should not be treated as proof of human authorship.
The EU AI Act is driving the change
The watermarking requirement comes from the European Union's AI Act, a broad legal framework that regulates how AI systems are developed and deployed in the EU. Among its many provisions, the act calls for greater transparency when content is created or 'processed' by AI. The goal is to help people understand whether they are reading machine-generated information, especially in contexts where deception could cause harm.
For Anthropic, compliance with the AI Act is a legal requirement because the company operates in the EU market. Building watermarking into Claude at the model level is a practical way to meet that requirement across all products and regions. The company's decision to go further and apply watermarks worldwide suggests a desire to avoid maintaining separate rules for different markets.
Industry reactions and open questions
Other AI companies are taking note of the same legal obligations. Google and Meta have both pledged to comply with the EU AI Act. OpenAI has said it will take a 'layered approach' to the act's transparency provisions. However, none of those companies has published a detailed plan for watermarking AI-generated text. Anthropic's announcement therefore makes it a first mover in the text watermarking space.
This may not be a coincidence. Anthropic has positioned Claude as a safety-conscious alternative to other AI assistants. Watermarking fits that narrative by giving users and regulators a concrete transparency mechanism. It also creates pressure on competitors to share their own plans, because a company that cannot identify its own model's output may have a harder time proving compliance in the future.
There are still open questions about how well text watermarking will work in practice. Paraphrasing, heavy rewriting, and machine translation can weaken a watermark. Skilled users might find ways to strip it. Anthropic has not yet explained how it will handle adversarial attempts to remove the mark, nor has it detailed the false-positive risk of its detection tools. These details will be crucial as the watermarking system reaches users.
What this means for Claude users
The practical effect of Claude's new watermarking is twofold. First, it will soon become much easier to detect Claude-created or 'processed' text. Anyone using Anthropic's upcoming detection tools will be able to analyze writing and identify whether it shows signs of Claude involvement. That capability could be valuable for teachers screening essays, recruiters reviewing resumes, and readers trying to evaluate online content.
Second, the watermarking means it will also be much easier for others to spot text that you have created with Claude. Rather than asking users to disclose AI use voluntarily, the technology itself will carry the information. That does not make every piece of generated text traceable, and it does not solve every transparency problem, but it marks a meaningful shift in how providers are approaching the issue.
